BACKGROUND

In the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic, Cal State Long Beach Parking and Transportation Services (PTS) released a 5-year fee increase plan. If implemented as prescribed, this plan would transform CSULB from being one of the most budget-friendly campuses to park at into one of the least affordable options in the CSU system.

The inevitable backlash from the student body gave rise to widespread misconceptions regarding the structure of PTS. Some students believed that the organization operated for profit, while others were perplexed by the rising costs of a necessity at a university where they were already paying substantial tuition fees.

RESEARCH

To address misconceptions and provide answers, I conducted an extensive analysis of over eight years worth of financial reports from Parking and Transportation Services. I cross referenced the condensed financial information with San Diego State University's PTS office to compare and contrast pandemic response and recovery decisions.

My research extended beyond these documents as I also conducted a revealing interview with a PTS representative, offering valuable insights into their complex decision-making processes.

WRITING

The financial struggles of a university's parking services is an inherently boring subject. I knew that if I wanted to create a successful video I would have an uphill battle keeping viewers entertained and engaged.

To achieve this goal, I transformed the financial reports and testimony I received into a rich and energetic narrative. Instead of simply telling viewers that parking prices were rising, I took them through a journey that left them understanding why parking prices were rising.

EDITING

The majority of this video was created using Adobe After Effects. The plug-ins GeoLayers and Element 3D were employed to create an impossible drone-like shot of Cal State Long Beach, helping define the scale of on-campus parking.

I recreated and animated the monotonous PTS financial report pages to give viewers a better understanding of the numbers, while holding their attention.
